Texas Panhandle: Snow squalls possible Saturday morning

The probability of snow tomorrow morning in the Texas Panhandle has increased. High-resolution weather model data suggests conditions will become favorable for a narrow, but heavy band of snow. That band of snow will initially materialize in Northeastern New Mexico; before progressing southeast into the northern Panhandle around 3 AM Saturday.

Snow bands, at times with near white-out conditions, will likely continue to slowly progress south toward Interstate 40 in the Texas Panhandle toward sunrise at mid-morning. North winds may gust over 40 MPH, and when combined with snow, may result in periods of low visibility and dangerous travel. We do not anticipate snow to last at any given location for more than a few hours. However, we may see more of a 'snow squall' versus just snow showers.

A snow squall is a relatively sudden transition from good visibility to heavy snow and very limited visibility. These sudden transitions can be problematic for drivers. In addition to reduced visibility, some snow may be heavy enough to accumulate quickly on all surfaces. With strong wind gusts, blowing snow is possible. The ‘lift’ causing tomorrow morning’s snow chances will depart the region around lunchtime. We’ll likely see a decrease and eventually dissipation of precipitation early tomorrow afternoon, as activity moves into the southeastern Texas Panhandle.

Given increased confidence in pockets of heavier snow, one to two inches of accumulation may occur across the northern half to the northern two-thirds of the Texas Panhandle. As usual in most of our winter weather setups, we'll likely see sharp gradients in accumulation totals. Localized snow accumulations of two to three inches can't be ruled out. Regardless of the exact numbers, accumulations may be difficult to measure due to strong wind gusts and blowing snow - even after snow quits falling tomorrow afternoon.

    But not in DFW

    • Texas Storm Chasers

Stephanie Rotthaus Correct. D/FW just gets crashy the cold front during the late morning hours. Gusty northwest winds, falling temperatures, but most likely 0% chance of rain.

    • Holly Duncan Jones

Yvonne Mc I’m used to snow, because you know I grew up in Clovis and we got it fairly often there and in pretty good amounts. But the first time we moved to LBK and it snowed, Larry and I were bundled up and outside running around like a couple of goofballs! 🙂 Of course, it was a pretty good amount…not like back home in BWD, where it barely covers the grass. We enjoy it when it snows here. We say if it’s gonna be cold, it might as well be snowing and cold!

  28. Christy Martinez

Will the snow push as far as Lubbock ??
