It’s Crashy the Cold Front Day, Texas!

Our much-discussed day of change has arrived to Texas. Unseasonably warm weather is about to give way to more seasonable, December-like weather across Texas. Even with cooler weather arriving, we’re not talking about an arctic outbreak. While we will see a twenty-degree drop in temperatures, that’ll only knock us back down toward where we should be for early December.

What is winter-like this morning are bands of snow moving south across the Texas Panhandle. Some of these bands are exhibiting snow-squall characteristics, often seen with lake-effect snow and more potent crashy the cold fronts in the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeastern United States.

Simulated weather model radar from this morning through Saturday evening; showing snow ending in the Panhandle around noon, and only isolated thunderstorms along a southeastward moving cold front from the Ark-La-Tex, south through East Texas, and Southeast Texas.

You go from mostly clear weather into a winter wonderland with gusty north winds and heavy snow. These snow bands shouldn’t sit over any area for more than one to two hours, but that may be enough to drop one-half inch to two inches of snow in spots, especially along and north of Interstate 40. As the dynamics supporting this morning’s snow depart around lunchtime, we’ll see the snow gradually diminish as it tries, but likely fails, to make it south toward Lubbock and off the Caprock.

Thunderstorm potential in East/Southeast Texas

Today's severe weather outlook across Texas now only has an isolated risk for hail across the Texas and Louisiana border, or far East Texas.

A strong cold front will steadily progress southeast across Texas today and tonight. This will be a pretty windy cold front, with wind gusts out of the northwest up to 50 MPH at times. You’ll definitely get the hint from Mother Nature when the front arrives, and those winds kick in. Thunderstorm chances have continued to decrease for East Texas and Southeast Texas. It now appears the highest chance for isolated to scattered storms will be right along the Louisiana border, and even that may not happen.

It’s fair to say this is another rain opportunity that has mostly evaporated, thanks to stronger upper-level lift remaining to our northeast, mistimed ingredients, and a ‘lid’ on the atmosphere (the cap) that will prevent most thunderstorm development. We can’t totally rule out a quick downpour, small hail, and gusty winds, but the severe weather chances for Texas are low.

Temperatures across Texas over the next few days

Today's high temperature forecast for Texas showing much cooler conditions across the northwestern half of the state, while the southeastern half enjoys one more unseasonably warm day before crashy the cold front arrives this evening.

High temperatures across Texas on Sunday will be much cooler, with temperatures only making it up into the 40s, 50s, and low 60s. About twenty degrees cooler tomorrow than the last few days, but still no where near an 'arctic blast'.

A quick warm up will begin on Monday across Texas as southerly winds return. Temperatures will top out in the upper 50s, 60s, to lower 70s.

Warm weather will continue across the southeastern two thirds of Texas on Tuesday, but cooler weather arrives in the Panhandle and West Texas with precipitation chances beginning Tuesday night.

With rain chances returning to the western half of Texas on Wednesday, high temperatures will be cooler and in the 40s and 50s. The southeastern half of Texas remains warm with temperatures in the 60s and 70s Wednesday afternoon.

Sunday through Tuesday morning will feature primarily dry weather across Texas. Cold air advection will keep temperatures on the cool side on Sunday, with high temperatures in the 40s and 50s and a few 60s south of Interstate 10 down into South Texas. Southerly winds return on Monday with a quick climb up the temperature roller-coaster – with 50s, 60s, and 70s expected Monday afternoon. Our next storm system, a slow mover that may stick around for a few days, begins to arrive on Tuesday with cooler air for the western third of Texas.

Wet weather Tuesday night through Friday?

Precipitation chances return beginning Tuesday, with off-and-on chances continuing through Friday. It looks like a rain event for now, but the Panhandle and West Texas may try to get flirty with a bit of snow. Let’s get past today’s headache of a weathermaker before we try to get entangled with next week’s wave of mischief from Mother Nature.

I hope Y’all have a great weekend, and I’ll be back with a new Texas Weather Roundup bright and early on Monday. Don’t forget to check out the Texas Storm Chasers store for your Christmas gift items! You can find our store at https://texasstormchasers.store/
