Return to Typical August Heat and Drier Conditions

While we’ve enjoyed unusually rainy and cooler than average weather the past week, all that will come to a screeching halt this weekend with the return of our summertime heat dome.  Upper level ridging over the eastern gulf has taken hold and is expected to expand westward and become centered over Texas by Monday.  This of course will mean a return of our typical August heat and dry conditions.  Heat Advisories are in place for all of north central and northeast Texas through Sunday evening where heat index temps today are expected to reach the 105 to 108 degree range.  Recent rainfall across the area will keep humidity levels quite high until we can dry out a bit so expect conditions outdoors to be quite miserable for the next several days.

Heat Advisories and Forecast Heat Index Temperatures for Saturday And Sunday

With increasing high pressure across the state, we’ll see a sharp decrease in rain and storm chances for the week ahead.  Today, the only strong to severe storm chances will reside across the central and northeastern Texas panhandle region.  The Storm Prediction Center has outlined this part of the state with a Marginal (Level 1) risk for storms today.  A “cold” front has moved into the region this morning but is not expected to make much progress south before it quickly washes out.  By peak daytime heating this afternoon, we do expect to see at least scattered development of storms along the remnant frontal boundary. The main threats with any storms that develop will be damaging wind and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.

Storm Potential Today

For far western Texas, we will continue to see monsoonal rain chances this afternoon and evening before we head into a drier trend for next week.  Elsewhere, mostly dry with only minimal chances for sneaky afternoon pop up showers. That’s your weekend update in a nutshell!  Stay hydrated, stay cool and stay safe!!!
