Near-Blizzard Snows Moving into Brazos Valley, East Texas, Southeast Texas with Extreme Cold

Radar at 1:02 AM

Heavy snow with near blizzard conditions is moving eastward across southern North Texas, Central Texas, South-Central Texas. A band of heavy snow is also progressing into the southern D/FW Metroplex. Near blizzard conditions with another quick inch or two of snow is likely with that final band for D/FW. Very heavy snow is ongoing on Interstate 35 from just south of Fort Worth and Dallas all the way south to Cortalla. Waco, Temple, Round Rock, Georgetown, Austin, San Marcos, New Braunfels, and San Antonio are all receiving snowfall of at least one inch per hour. That very heavy band of snow will continue moving east this morning and will soon impact the Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, East Texas, and Northeast Texas. Significant snow accumulations are likely.

Very heavy accumulations with an additional four to eight inches of snow can be expected in those regions this morning. Sleet is mixing in with the snow across the Coastal Plains. We just received a report of a hellacious sleet storm in Victoria. Any sleet that mixes in will reduce snow accumulations, but put down a layer of ice. We anticipate heavy snow in Bryan/College Station, Huntsville, and the Houston Metro by 3 AM. Temperatures are in the teens where snow is falling with colder air filtering in from the north. Overall, the snow is moving east at around 30 MPH.

Extreme cold is filtering in with the heaviest snows. Temperatures behind the snow are plummeting to record lows with a snowpack in place. Temperatures later this morning, and even after sunrise, will be extremely cold across Texas. Most folks will stay well below freezing today with another record-breaking night of cold tonight. Another major winter storm, including a potential significant ice storm, is likely tomorrow night and Wednesday across North Texas, Central Texas, and Northeast Texas. We’ll talk more about that later this morning.
