Freezing Temperatures for All of Texas by Morning; Winter mix possible in South Texas

This afternoon, light precipitation has been ongoing across the Hill Country, South-Central Texas, and the Brazos Valley. Where temperatures are below freezing, we’ve seen a thin layer of ice develop on elevated, exposed objects. A few slick bridges will be possible this evening. We expect precipitation across those regions to diminish this evening. Our eyes will shift into South Texas through the Coastal Bend tonight into tomorrow morning.

Light ice accumulations are possible tonight and Friday morning across South Texas and the Coastal Bend. Some bridges and overpasses may become slick.

Additional precipitation is expected to develop and move across South Texas, Deep South Texas, and the Coastal Bend tonight and tomorrow morning. Short-term weather model guidance is ‘right on the line’ on whether or not surface temperatures will drop below freezing. Where temperatures remain above 32 degrees, we’ll have very cold rain. Where surface temperatures fall below 32 degrees, we’ll likely see ice form on exposed, elevated surfaces.

I think most surface roads will remain primarily wet unless temperatures drop below 30 degrees or we have heavier bursts of sleet. Regardless, it would be wise to assume bridges and elevated roads will be slick tomorrow morning across South Texas east into the Coastal Bend. I mean, they’ll be wet, and we’ve all seen how our fellow drivers handle wet roads.

Very cold across Texas tonight

Temperatures will rise above freezing across Texas tomorrow afternoon. Any winter accumulations will also melt off late tomorrow morning into the afternoon hours.

Tonight's low temperature forecast across Texas has temperatures falling into the 10s, 20s, and lower 30s.

Except for the urban corridors in the Rio Grande Valley and Southeast Texas, all of Texas will drop near or below freezing tonight. Wind chill temperatures will be five to fifteen degrees colder than the actual air temperature. It is going to be a three-dog kind of a night! Temperatures will still be forty degrees warmer than what we experienced last February.

Weekend Weather Outlook

A slow warm-up will commence tomorrow across Texas. Dry air will allow for decent diurnal temperature swings along with plenty of static electricity. Daytime temperatures will return to the 50s and 60s by Sunday and Monday. Overnight low temperatures will still be on the chilly side, but it is January after all. Our next weather-maker and cold front look to arrive later on Monday and Tuesday.
