Winter Storm Warning for South Texas & Coastal Bend for Thursday Night – Friday Morning

The National Weather Service has issued a plethora of winter weather products for portions of Southern Texas. I don’t want folks getting hung up on differences in winter weather advisories versus winter storm warnings versus wind chill alerts, etc. The key points will be that all of Texas will be cold tomorrow through Friday, and southern Texas could have light winter precipitation tomorrow into Friday morning.

Light freezing rain or freezing drizzle may cause spotty slick spots tomorrow across the Hill Country and South-Central Texas. Hopefully, we can keep things on the isolated side, but keep an eye up just in case things go downhill.

The main show is forecast to occur Thursday Night into Friday Morning – south of Interstate 10. Precipitation will move east into South Texas from Mexico during the night. Temperatures at the surface are likely to drop below freezing well down into Deep South Texas. At this time, it looks like the Rio Grande Valley should remain just above freezing. Folks just north and west of the RGV won’t be so lucky.

Ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch are possible tomorrow night through Friday Morning across South Texas, Deep South Texas, the Coastal Bend, and the Coastal Plains. Slick and hazardous travel conditions are probable, especially on bridges and overpasses. Some travel impacts may occur further north into the Hill Country and South-Central Texas, but that is lower confidence at this time. Regardless, it only takes a glaze of ice on bridges to cause chaos – so keep your eyes up.

Sleet is also possible tomorrow night in the Edwards Plateau and Deep South Texas, especially the farther west you go. Sleet accumulations up to one-half inch could occur if we see heavier bursts. Heavier sleet bursts may also ‘coat’ roadways in ice, so road conditions would go downhill quickly if that scenario were to come to fruition.

Temperatures will rise above freezing by lunchtime Friday, resulting in any remaining precipitation changing back over to rain.
