Easter Egg Hail Storms Headed For Texas Tomorrow

The final day of March has arrived, and so has Easter. May you enjoy the day the Lord has made. No significant weather complications are anticipated. We’ll see breezy south winds, partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies, and warm afternoon temperatures. There is a low chance of a thunderstorm or two in West Texas and the Texas Panhandle late this evening. Some hail may occur if those storms develop; otherwise, we’ll see a windy night and start to April.

Monday will be a much more active day in the weather department. A surface dryline will push east toward Highway 281 by early afternoon. We’ll see southwesterly winds and low humidity values west of the dryline. Very high wildfire danger is expected, and any new starts have the potential to spread quickly in critical fire weather conditions. Mostly cloudy skies are expected east of the dryline with humid conditions and gusty southerly winds. A robust cap (lid on the atmosphere) will prevent thunderstorms from developing through the mid-afternoon hours.

Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible across southern Oklahoma, Texoma, and North Texas Monday afternoon and evening. A more isolated risk may develop farther south into the Hill Country and Central Texas Monday night. The strongest storms may produce very large hail, localized damaging winds, and a tornado.

Between 3 and 5 PM, isolated to scattered supercellular development is likely to occur east of the dryline in Texoma and parts of North Texas. While the number of storms may be limited, those that do form could be quite intense. The most severe storms could produce hail up to the size of baseballs, localized damaging wind gusts up to 70 MPH, and some tornado risk. The highest chance of a tornado is closer to the Red River and north into Oklahoma. These storms will be moving rapidly to the northeast at 40 to 50 MPH.

Later Monday evening, thunderstorms may develop along the dryline/cool front in North Texas, extending south into the Hill Country. The line of storms would move east into Tuesday morning. The most substantial upper-level lift will be across the northern half of Texas, so there is uncertainty on how far south, or how many storms, will be able to develop. Some storms in the line may be strong to severe, with pocket-change-size hail and strong wind gusts. The threat of severe storms will decrease early Tuesday morning, though some storms may continue toward sunrise.  A cooler and drier airmass will move into Texas on Tuesday behind the departing storm system. That’ll bring an end to precipitation chances until late in the week.

Texas Eclipse Weather Forecast

We’ll begin covering the Eclipse forecast in detail tomorrow. The short version is trends are not good for Eclipse viewing in Texas. Long-range weather model ensemble data shows an above-average chance of cloud cover and precipitation next Monday afternoon. We’re still too far out to determine whether we’re dealing with upper-level clouds (which may still allow some viewing opportunities) versus low-level clouds or precipitation chances. As we’re still eight days away from the eclipse, changes to the weather forecast are guaranteed.
