Cool Front has Arrived in Texas; Isolated Hailers on Wednesday

A cool front has made its way across the northern half of Texas this morning. Temperatures are definitely on the chilly side, especially with the northerly wind. Still, it does seem like winter mostly did end back in January. We’ve had cold snaps – but nothing long-lasting since the mid-January burst. At this rate, we should be happy that we’re not starting a streak of triple-digit days. Look on the bright side, right? Today will be dry across Texas; for most of the state, that’ll remain true until early next week.

Wednesday will be a day to watch, as isolated thunderstorms could develop due to an upper-level storm system moving overhead. Some very light rain is possible for the northern two-thirds of Texas tomorrow. However, the presence of dry air at low levels means most rain will evaporate before reaching the ground. Despite this, we may see a few strong storms moving eastward on Wednesday afternoon in the Big Country and North Texas. The cold temperatures aloft could lead to small hail and gusty winds, with some storms potentially producing hail up to the size of quarters. While we don’t expect many storms, it’s important to note that activity will decrease after sunset.

The wildfire threat will remain high across the western third of Texas, down into the Edwards Plateau and Rio Grande Plains through mid-week. The risk will expand back into the Panhandle on Thursday after a couple of days of drying out.

The wildfire threat will remain high across the western third of Texas, down into the Edwards Plateau and Rio Grande Plains through mid-week. The risk will expand back into the Panhandle on Thursday after a couple of days of drying out. Today and tomorrow will feature not-as-warm temperatures across the northern two-thirds of Texas. We’ll climb the temperature roller-coaster on Thursday and Friday, with 70s and 80s returning statewide. By Saturday and Easter Sunday, afternoon temperatures in the 80s and 90s will become commonplace. Unfortunately, some in the Big Bend and Edwards Plateau may flirt with 100 degrees on Sunday. The good news is that the weather will be dry. The bad news is that Easter Sunday will be downright hot across Texas.

After tomorrow’s storm-maker, we’ll have to wait until early next week for our next chance of showers and thunderstorms. This dressing in layers is a hassle. I start out in a sweat shirt, then change to a t-shirt as the day progresses. It’s like a slow strip tease. Ridiculous!!
