From Severe Storms To Blowing Snow: A Texas Weather Roundup!

The past 24 hours have been marked by intense storm activity across various parts of Texas. From Sunday afternoon to this morning, the state experienced a series of brief tornadoes, including one near Perryton, another southeast of Shamrock, a third about thirty miles southwest of Wichita Falls, and a waterspout over Lake Lewisville. These storms also brought with them significant hail, strong winds, and heavy rainfall. As mentioned in Saturday’s Texas Weather Roundup, the relatively low-level moisture prevented a major tornado outbreak across multiple states. However, the storms have largely subsided early this morning.

Currently, a line of showers and thunderstorms is making its way eastward across the Ark-La-Tex, Northeast Texas, East Texas, and Southeast Texas. These storms, which could potentially bring damaging wind gusts, small hail, and even a brief tornado, are expected to exit the state and move into Louisiana by lunchtime. If we can manage to keep things under control, precipitation chances should end by early afternoon in the mentioned areas.

For the Texas Panhandle, a different kind of weather is in store today. Snow showers are likely, particularly along and north of Interstate 40. Strong north winds will lead to periods of blowing snow and reduced visibility. The highest chance for one to two inches of snow will be north of a Dumas to Perryton line. A dusting to one inch of snow, in spots, may occur north of a Hereford to Amarillo to Borger to Canadian line. While warm soil temperatures may limit significant accumulations, the strong winds will cause the snow to scatter. Snowfall is expected to cease by this evening. There is a very high wildfire threat today across the Edwards Plateau, Rio Grande Plains, South Texas, into the Big Bend region of Southwest Texas, and Far West Texas. Conditions will remain similar on Tuesday and Wednesday. This southward shift compared to earlier this month is thanks to cooler, wet weather in the Panhandle today.

Isolated showers are possible Tuesday night in West Texas and the Texas Panhandle. Isolated showers and a thunderstorm may occur across the northern half of Texas on Wednesday. We’re not expecting widespread precipitation at this point, but we’ll keep an eye on data just in case Mother Nature throws a fast one. The rest of the work week and the weekend look dry and warm. I’m optimistic we’ll be able to keep the nice weather going throughout Easter Weekend.

A cool front will bring a temperature drop to the northern half of Texas later today and through Wednesday. High temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the 50s across the northern third of Texas, the 60s in the center row of the state, and in the 70s to right around 80 degrees for the southern third. A warm-up begins on Thursday and Friday, with afternoon temperatures returning to the upper 70s and 80s. For today? Dalhart will be lucky to get above 32 degrees, while McAllen and Brownsville will top out around 92 degrees. Welcome to spring, folks!
