Momma Nature leaving Texas alone this week

The post-Christmas timeframe has featured some of our most active weather in recent years across Texas. From deadly tornadoes to blizzards, we’ve seen some bad things. This year’s weather for the final week of 2023 will be the polar opposite of 2015. No tornadoes, blizzards, floods, or crazy arctic intrusions.

Don’t get me wrong, it will feel like December over the next several days. A cold front pushed through Texas on the backside of our departing Christmas Eve storm system. That front has brought temperatures down to where they should be for late December. While it is cooler across Texas, to downright cold in the Panhandle at times, we’re not dealing with an arctic airmass. Daily high temperatures will still make it up toward seasonal averages. Compared to the warm month we had, it will certainly feel colder.

If you’re hoping to add a few drops of rain or snow to your rain gauge before 2023 ends, don’t bet on it. Our prospects for widespread precipitation are in the single digits for the final week of 2023. The best chance for light rain will be across the eastern quarter of Texas in about a week, and even that’s not too impressive. Our weather for the next seven days looks to behave. Our warmest day looks to be Sunday, with the 60s and 70s across the southern two-thirds of Texas (roughly along and south of Interstate 20). High temperatures in the 50s are expected across the northern third of Texas.
