Scattered Storm Chances Statewide This Afternoon

Unsettled weather will continue today and last into next week as a series of upper level disturbances bring daily chances of rain. The good news is we’re not expecting any widespread flooding or severe weather issues over the next couple of days. What we will have to deal with is the potential for localized gusty winds with stronger storms in the afternoon. Some heavy rains will also be possible with minor flooding.

Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across all of Texas today.  The best chance for a passing storm will be during the afternoon hours when the atmosphere will be most unstable. Most folks will stay dry today. A few stronger storms with small hail, gusty winds up to 50 MPH, and heavy rain will be possible. Storm movement will be slow and thus if one pops up over your location it could dump a quick inch or two of rain.

Rain chances will be highest tonight in the Texas Panhandle where a stationary front will help focus new thunderstorm development tonight. A low level jet will continue to pump moisture in from the south. Some locations may pick up an inch or two of rain tonight. Severe weather is not anticipated at this time, but don’t be surprised if you get woken up by a loud storm.

More storms are anticipated on Thursday with the best chances in the southern Texas Panhandle, West Texas, Northwest Texas, and the Middle Texas Coast, South Texas, into the Rio Grande Valley. Isolated storms will be possible elsewhere. Like today a few locations may experience gusty winds up to 50 MPH, small hail, and locally heavy rains. We’ll have to keep an eye on the Texas Panhandle where conditions may become marginally favorable for a few severe storms Thursday afternoon and evening.
