Increasing Rain Chances Tomorrow Lasting Into Next Week

A cold front which moved into the panhandle late yesterday is currently stalling out from about Childress down to Lubbock and towards Plains along the TX/NM border. The front is not expected to drift much further south/southeast, but it will create a focus for additional scattered showers and storms during the overnight hours. Rainfall amounts across the rolling plains are expected to be on the decrease from was we saw earlier this afternoon with areas around Childress, Matador and Turkey receiving around 3 inches, so flooding overnight will not be as much of an issue and will remain very localized to typically flood-prone areas. Gusty winds and periods of localized heavy rain will be possible, but severe weather is not expected. Elsewhere across the state, widely scattered pop-up storms from this afternoon will be on the decrease and diminish during the early overnight hours leaving most of the rest of the state rain free.

Lows tonight will drop down into the 60’s behind the front. Ahead of the front, we’ll once again be dealing with a warm and muggy night with lows ranging from the low to mid 70s which is a tad above seasonal averages for this time of the year.

Scattered showers are expected once again by early tomorrow afternoon with more coverage expected across the state. Not everyone will see rain tomorrow, but those that do could pick up a quick 1/2 inch or more as storm intensity and coverage peaks by late afternoon. Once again, severe weather is not expected. The main hazards will come in the form of brief heavy downpours which could produce very localized flash flooding, gusty winds and lightning. Those with outdoor activities…sports practice and so forth…will need to keep an eye on the sky and be prepared to head indoors if you hear thunder. This rainy pattern will carry on through the remainder of the week and into next week as an upper level trough continues to sit across the desert southwest spreading lift across our state. It won’t be raining all the time for everyone, but it appears that a good portion of the state will have the chance at seeing at least some rainfall between now and early next week!
