How does upcoming Texas Winter Storm compare to February 2021?

By nearly all accounts, the February 2021 Texas Winter Storm ‘Week of Hell’ was once a fifty-year event. The week-long arctic outbreak brought record low temperatures to all of Texas along with four winter storms. Those aspects alone were remarkable – and we’re not even counting the power demand event that resulted in suffering and gnashing of teeth.

The upcoming winter storm is not a repeat of February 2021. Each storm is different, and no two are alike. It will not be as cold, the cold will not last seven days, and we are dealing with varying types of precipitation. Localized power outages will be possible due to ice-storm-related damage. Both events will result in hazardous road conditions.

Even during the La Nina years, winter storms in Texas are not unusual. It is not the end of the world or a reason to feel anxious. Temperatures will be rising this weekend. Although, temperatures will climb much more slowly in areas with significant ice and snow accumulations.

Thank you to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth for putting together such an informative graphic.
