Texas Winter Storm – Early Thursday Morning Update

A significant winter storm continues early this morning from the Concho Valley northeast through Texoma. One-half inch to one inch of ice has accumulated on power lines and exposed objects across the northern D/FW Metroplex up toward Bonham. Tree damage and power outages are ongoing, and a damaging ice storm is underway. We’re optimistic that the persistent freezing rain for those folks will change over to sleet and snow by 3 AM.

Sleet and snow continue across the Concho Valley, Big Country, and western North Texas. New bands of snow have developed across the Texas Panhandle and West Texas. Those snow bands may produce one-half to one inch of snow in an hour for some folks.

The freezing line will progress southeast across the Hill Country and toward the Interstate 35 corridor in Central Texas as we continue through the next several hours. We anticipate a change-over to freezing rain and sleet for folks in Waco, Temple, Georgetown, Round Rock, Austin, New Braunfels, and the northern San Antonio Metro by sunrise. Accumulating ice will result in hazardous travel conditions, tree damage, and possibly power outages.

Snow is falling in the Borderland, including the City of El Paso. About an hour ago, we even had thundersnow reported at the El Paso airport. Some folks in the city have reported two to three inches of snow accumulations – with a few more inches of snow likely through the late morning hours. Snow will taper off by early afternoon in the Borderland.

Across Northeast Texas, East Texas, the Brazos Valley, and Southeast Texas

Temperatures remain above freezing, so all precipitation is rain. We even have a few thunderstorms across Central Texas and the Upper Texas Coast. Severe thunderstorms are not expected, but heavier downpours may result in minor street flooding.
