Storms with heavy rain and small hail likely Tonight & Monday Morning

Texas weather radar at 5:07 PM

We’ve had a mostly quiet afternoon in the thunderstorm department. After a couple of hailers this morning in Texoma, storms have struggled to maintain their organization across Northeast Texas. A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for Northeast Texas through 6 PM. I’m not sure if they’ll extend the watch based on the organization (or lack thereof) of thunderstorms this afternoon. A few strong to marginally severe storms remain possible through 8 PM in Northeast Texas, eastern North Texas, and the northern Brazos Valley. If activity continues to exhibit the behavior it has most of this afternoon, we’ll probably get away with a few reports of dime to nickel size hail through dinnertime.

Later tonight, closer to midnight, we’ll likely see thunderstorms fire up in the Edwards Plateau (around Del Rio) northeastward through the Hill Country, Central Texas, and East Texas. A southward moving cold front will act as a focal point for development overnight. A few storms may produce nickel to quarter size hail, but most activity will remain below severe limits. Some storms will be loud with frequent lightning, heavy rain, and small hail. Showers are likely north of the cold front, where temperatures will be on the chilly side. Precipitation will move northeast and continue past sunrise Monday.

One to three inches of rain is possible by sunrise in parts of the Hill Country, Central Texas, and East Texas. Localized flooding of roadways, streams, and low-lying areas may occur where multiple heavy storms train (or move) over the same locations. Localized flooding will likely be the primary/most-common issue tonight. Secondary concerns include instances of dime to quarter size hail.
