Snow Day in the Texas Panhandle; Rain/Storms Tonight along/east I-35

Dense fog this morning will slowly decrease in overall intensity through this afternoon. Sadly, some folks will remain hidden in clouds most of the day. It isn’t going to be the most pleasant weather, but it beats being in exceptional drought and having flaming tumbleweeds blowing past your door. That is less likely when you’re in a cloud, and have moisture.

A quick band of showers (rain or snow) will move across the Borderland and Far West Texas late this morning. Those won’t amount to much, just like my hairline. By early afternoon, more appreciable precipitation will move east into the Texas Panhandle and West Texas. A dry slot will kick into West Texas this afternoon, ending precipitation around Lubbock. Further north in the Panhandle, it will be a snow day. Moderate to heavy snow is expected, especially across the northwestern half of the Panhandle. One to five inches of snow is possible, with the higher snow totals localized to smaller bands. We’ll likely see snow accumulate on roads, so plan on snow-packed road conditions this afternoon through Friday morning (at least).

Showers and thunderstorms will move across the eastern half of Texas tonight through early Friday afternoon. Severe storms are unlikely, though some stronger storms may produce small hail. As the storm system departs Friday afternoon, we may see enough cold air aloft to mix in snowflakes across Texoma and Northeast Texas. Accumulations are not expected. Rain totals will average one-quarter to three-quarters of an inch later today through Friday afternoon across the eastern third of Texas. Not enough rain to cause major flooding concerns, but enough rain to make driving more unpleasant.

A quick-hitting system may bring light snow to the Panhandle and West Texas on Saturday morning. That’s not a guarantee; there may be too much dry air for snow to reach the surface. Yet, light accumulations (dusting to one inch) can’t be ruled out. It’s one of those situations where I’ll mention it to cover my own rather obnoxious posterior, just in case.

Monday is going to be interesting in the weather department. An intensifying storm system that packs a punch is expected to move across Texas. The system itself won’t move into the western United States until Saturday. Once it moves onshore, we’ll better understand how things may unfold on Monday here in the Lone Star State. There is the potential for an impactful winter storm across the Texas Panhandle, western/northern Oklahoma, into Kansas. Strong winds may result in blowing snow. Showers and storms are likely across the eastern half of Texas. The severe storm threat is uncertain but can’t be ruled out in Southeast Texas. Let us get past today’s system, and we’ll focus our lackluster attention on Monday after that. This weekend looks mostly dry for Texas outside of Saturday’s brief precipitation chances. Several days of less active weather are expected after Monday’s system.
