Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue overnight and into the morning hours Thursday. The highest chance for rain will be across the Edwards Plateau, South-Central Texas, Hill Country, Central Texas, North Texas, and Northeast Texas. While most of the D/FW Metroplex has been dry this evening, that’ll change overnight as storms move in from the southwest. Most storms tonight will move northeast. Not all thunderstorms will be severe tonight. However, there is a risk for more intense activity through 5 AM. A tornado watch is in place for the Edwards Plateau, Hill Country, and South-Central Texas through 5 AM. We’ve got a tornado watch through 2 AM for North Texas. A new severe weather watch may be issued to cover more of North-Central Texas after midnight. The strongest storms may continue producing large hail and localized damaging wind gusts. A tornado or two can’t be ruled out, but I think hail/wind will be the two primary severe hazards. Most storms will not produce intense severe weather, but all storms will be loud.

Potential for heavy rain and localized flooding overnight

Heavy rainfall and localized flooding will be a concern overnight, especially in areas that have multiple storms over a few hours. Some locations in North and Central Texas may receive two to four inches of rain by sunrise Thursday. Localized flooding would be a threat, especially in urban locations where water drainage is less efficient. Be mindful of flooded roadways and the difficulty of seeing them during the night.
