It’s Cold Front Day, Texas!

February 2024 may be the month mostly without winter, but Mama Nature will provide us with a brief glimpse of what could have been this weekend. A cold front has begun moving south into Texas this morning. Gusty north winds will accompany the front and continue behind it most of today and Saturday. You’ll know when the front has arrived because temperatures will drop a good twenty degrees. We’re not talking about holy moly, crashy the Arctic cold front here, but we’ll get temperatures back down to February norms.

Forecast rain totals across Texas over the next week. Two to three inches of rain may fall across the RGV and Deep South Texas through Saturday morning. Localized flooding will be possible, and some roads may have high water.

Rain will continue throughout South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, and the Rio Grande Plains, up through the Coastal Bend, Coastal Plains, and across Southeast Texas. Pretty much the southeastern third of Texas. Two to three inches of rain may fall across the RGV and Deep South Texas through Saturday morning. Localized flooding will be possible, and some roads may have high water. Severe thunderstorms are not expected, thankfully. Drier air behind the arriving cold front will end the rain chances by lunchtime on Saturday. Once the rain concludes, Texas should experience nearly completely dry weather for seven days.

Tonight's low temperature forecast for Texas shows a freeze across the northwest half of Texas.

Saturday's high temperatures across Texas show a chilly day with highs in the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Sunday morning's low temperature forecast shows a freeze across the northern 75% of Texas.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing across the northern two-thirds of Texas by Sunday morning. Those who have already planted cold-sensitive plants will need to protect them. We will not be emulating February 2021’s record cold, but starting your Saturday and Sunday mornings will be chilly.

Spring Quickly Returns to Texas

Our cold front and return to winter will be brief and without much fuss. Temperatures will quickly warm Sunday afternoon into the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will propel our afternoon temperatures into the 70s and 80s statewide. Honestly, we may even have some 90s showing up by mid-week. Temperatures will be ten to twenty degrees above the 30-year climatological averages for most of the upcoming week. We may stay that way until the final days of February.
