Cold This Morning but Rebounding Some This Afternoon

2016-01-18_6-09-33

We’re starting off cold this morning with temperatures down into the 20s and 30s as far south as Interstate 10. Childress is at 23, D/FW at 28, Wichita Falls at 21, and Austin at 30. You’ll want to bundle up if you’re heading out for any MLK events later this morning.

A Freezing Fog Advisory is in effect for most of the Texas Panhandle through 10 AM. While not shown here there is also patchy freezing fog across the Permian Basin. If there is dense fog with temperatures below freezing there could be slick spots on roads and bridges. Be cautious of that possibility this morning. Fog is also occuring across parts of the Hill Country. All fog will burn off by late-morning.

There will be two air masses inhabiting Texas today. The colder one will keep temperatures in the 40s across the eastern Panhandle, Northwest Texas, North Texas, and Northeast Texas. Cold-air advection will insure a chilly day for those locations. Temperatures across the Permian Basin, Hill Country, into Southwest Texas will be warmer with 50s to low 60s. South-Central Texas, the Coastal Plains, and Southeast Texas will enjoy a nice rebound this afternoon with low to mid 60s. Finally South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley will top out in the upper 60s to low 70s. Mostly cloudy skies this morning will begin to thin out by this afternoon. Most folks should get to enjoy partly cloudy skies at some point later today.

Temperatures tonight will be warmer than those this morning. The Panhandle will drop into the upper 20s to right around 30 degrees. West Texas, Northwest Texas, Northeast Texas, and the Permian Basin will drop off into the low and mid 30s. Southeast Texas, South-Central Texas, and the Concho Valley will be in the upper 30s to lower 40s. The Rio Grande Valley will be the warmest with low temperatures right around 51 to 52 degrees.

The next chance for light rain will come on Tuesday Night across Northeast and East Texas. At this point it looks like a few showers will be possible with light rain accumulations. A better chance for rain will arrive on Wednesday and Wednesday Night across North Texas into Northeast Texas and East Texas. An isolated storm will be possible but no severe weather is expected.
