Storms Return To East Texas On Thursday

Welcome back to another work week, and I hope Y’all enjoyed some good food and time with friends over the holiday weekend. We’re starting out on the cool side this morning, with freezing temperatures across the northern third to the northern forty percent of Texas. It’s downright cold in the Panhandle, with temperatures down into the teens.

Now that crashy the cold front has made it south through Texas, today’s high temperatures will also be on the cool side. We’re expecting temperatures to top out in the 40s and 50s statewide, with maybe Brownsville reaching 60 degrees. Tonight will be chilly, with another freeze across the northern third to the northern half of Texas. We’ll see the southern half of Texas also fall into the chilly category but remain above freezing.

A slow warmup will begin tomorrow and continue into Thursday, coincident with the arrival of our next weather maker. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected Thursday afternoon into Thursday night across the eastern third of Texas. How far west those rain chances extend will depend on the timing and specifics, which we will fine-tune as we get closer to mid-week.

Severe thunderstorm chances remain uncertain but will need to be monitored. The main question revolves around how much low-level instability will be available. Given the high amount of wind shear anticipated with Thursday’s system, more instability will mean a higher chance for severe storms. This is fairly common for ‘cool-season’ severe weather threats in the southern United States, and it doesn’t take much ‘instability’ with high shear events. We’ll be watching.

Rainfall amounts of one-tenth to two inches will be possible across the eastern third of Texas, with the highest rain totals in the Ark-La-Tex, Piney Woods, and Golden Triangle.

Rain chances look to move east of Texas by Friday morning, with cooler temperatures for the northwestern half of Texas on Friday.
