The final days of March will be dry across Texas. Precipitation chances will remain minimal until April begins. While we won’t have rain, we will have plenty of wind and climbing temperatures. Today won’t be too windy, with a few wind gusts approaching 30 MPH in the western half of Texas. We’ll see gusty winds up to 45 MPH out of the south on Friday across the state. Similar conditions are likely on both Saturday and Sunday.
This weekend’s primary issue will be wildfire danger across the western third of Texas. A surface dryline will keep the eastern two-thirds of Texas under increasingly humid conditions by Sunday and Monday. An acrid airmass with warm temperatures and gusty winds will promote fast-moving grass fires west of the dryline. High temperatures will be above average across most of Texas this weekend. For example, temperatures on Easter Sunday will top out in the 80s and 90s. Laredo to Eagle Pass will be dangerously close to 100 degrees on Sunday.
Dewpoint temperatures up into the 60s will bring a more muggy feel to the air for the eastern half of Texas on Sunday and Monday. That increasingly moisture-rich airmass will help set the stage for a potentially busy Monday in the thunderstorm department.
Severe Thunderstorm Setup on April Fools (Monday)
Severe thunderstorms are possible Monday afternoon into Monday night across Texoma, North Texas, Central Texas, the Ark-La-Tex, and Northeast Texas. A positively-tilted shortwave (fancy meteorological mumbo-jumbo for a type of upper-level storm system) will help erode a lid (cap) on the atmosphere east of a surface dryline by late Monday afternoon.
Scattered thunderstorms, probably severe, are expected to develop either during the late afternoon or later in the evening when a cool front arrives. There is plenty of moisture, which we lacked yesterday and this past Sunday, and that upper-level lift (wind shear) should promote a severe thunderstorm threat. We’re too far out to get into the nitty-gritty of specific severe weather hazards, but it’s always a good idea to be prepared.
The strongest storms may produce large hail, damaging winds, and potentially some tornado threat. Again, we’ll dive deeper into the specific threat levels once we’re into the weekend. Don’t get locked in on any lines on a risk map at this range. Things will change, and depending on the eventual culmination of ingredients, the storm threat could expand farther south into Texas or lift north.
Crashy the Cold Front After the Storms
A decent cool front will arrive behind Monday’s system, knocking temperatures back down toward or a bit below historical averages for early April. That’s a good thing, too, because it will be 103 to 105 degrees Monday afternoon around Laredo to Eagle Pass. The wildfire threat will remain high across the western half of Texas on Monday, with gusty winds statewide.
