Dry Stretch with Hot Temperatures & Elevated Fire Danger

Good morning Texas! I hope you had a good weekend and didn’t get a sunburn. After a few days of active storms last week we’re looking at a much quieter day across Texas.

Temperatures are going to top out in the triple digits in the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, Permian Basin, Far West Texas, and Concho Valley today. Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland, and El PAso look to all make it above 103 degrees this afternoon. Some locations will make a run at the upper 100s. As temperatures get up there this afternoon a few isolated storms may break through the cap. If we do get a few storms to fire they could be strong with localized gusty winds. By far most folks will stay dry today. Elsewhere rain chances are pretty much shut down today with sunny skies. High temperatures will top out in the middle to upper 90s across the eastern half of Texas. Heat index values will be a couple degrees warmer.

It will end up being pretty windy this afternoon with south winds gusting up to 25 MPH across a good portion of the state. I mention the wind because we’re now at a point where surface fuels have started to dry out. Grass fires are becoming more a concern, especially across the western half of Texas. Even with a few storms last week the hot temperatures have caused vegetation to quickly dry out. Hot temperatures, gusty south winds, and dry vegetation all mean fast-moving grass fires will be possible. Firefighters will have to deal with soft/muddy soil as well – thus a heightened risk of getting their rigs stuck.

Much of the work week will remain hot and dry. A few afternoon storms will be possible in Southeast Texas each afternoon this week as the seabreeze becomes active. Otherwise we have to wait until Friday for a very low chance of showers/storms. Even then it will continue to be hot. Only 166 days until Christmas!
