Scattered Strong Storms Thursday – Cold Front Arrives Early Friday

One more day of above-average highs, then a cold front arrives and drops us back down to cooler than average temps for a few days. Tonight should be mostly quiet across the state once the storms currently ongoing across western north Texas begin to die off. Lows tonight will be warm, muggy and in the 70s except for folks behind the dryline in the panhandle region and far west Texas where lows tonight will drop into the 50s. Highs tomorrow will reach the upper 80s to low 90s and feel relatively muggy for this time of the year for folks east of the dryline which is expected to set up diagonally across the rolling plains and far southern panhandle.

The dryline across western north Texas will be active again tomorrow afternoon and evening as we reach peak daytime heating ahead of the arrival of our next cold front.  We’ll have plenty of moisture in place ahead of the dryline, and with ample surface heating by mid afternoon, instability values will reach moderate levels and we’ll begin to see development of scattered showers and storms from roughly the Childress area down across the rolling plains over towards Lubbock. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the far southeastern corner of the Texas Panhandle around Childress under a Slight Risk for severe storms tomorrow afternoon. A Marginal Risk extends further southwest over towards the Lubbock area. Greatest threats with tomorrow evening’s storms will be large hail and damaging winds. Once the cold front arrives, these storms should quickly become undercut and lose their severe potential. Rainfall is anticipated to continue into the overnight hours and spread southeast just ahead of and behind the front into the early morning hours on Friday.

Rainfall ahead of and behind the front doesn’t look like anything to get too excited about.  Once the front has moved through the state by early Saturday morning, we’ll be looking at much drier air behind the front and a very pleasant weekend ahead!
