Rain & Storms Today – Strong Cold Front Arrives Later Today

Simulated Radar Through 8pm This Evening

Good morning and happy Saturday!  The weather highlights today will be the continued chances for heavy rainfall across south central Texas, the chance for strong storms across the Trans Pecos/Permian Basin/Big Country regions later this afternoon, and the chances for additional rainfall and isolated storm development along a strong cold front arriving later this afternoon and overnight.

Ongoing rainfall this morning across south central Texas and the coastal bend will continue through the late morning and early afternoon hours shifting east as the day progresses.  The heaviest rainfall today is expected mainly south of I-10 between Victoria and Freeport, and it will lead to continued nuisance flooding issues. As we get into the late afternoon hours, rainfall will begin to taper off from west to east. Severe weather is not expected…mainly just brief heavy downpours and some lightning with stronger cells embedded within the current mass rain over the region.

A few strong to severe storms are possible across west Texas as the cold front arrives later this afternoon. Development is expected to begin across southeastern New Mexico by mid-afternoon with continued storm development during the late afternoon and early evening hours across the Trans Pecos/Permian Basin region.  As the storms develop, they’ll be moving south/southwest along with the frontal boundary. The primary threat with these storms will be hail.  The tornado potential is pretty much zero with limited instability and wind shear.

Texas will be doing its thing again with temps today…much cooler across the panhandle and north Texas…much warmer across western Texas…and mild across central and south central Texas today mainly due to continued cloud cover and rain chances.  Temps will fall quickly behind the front this evening and overnight, and it looks like we’ll stay at more seasonal levels well into next week.
