Pleasant Weather (For Most) through Late Week

It is my hope that many of you will enjoy our weather over the next couple of days. We’re not going to be too hot nor are we going to be too cold. Temperatures will remain within a few degrees of their averages for late September and even early October. Yup, we’re only a few days away from the first of October. Where has this year gone? The cool front that slowly pushed south this past weekend has ushered in a noticeably drier airmass at the surface. We are still dealing with a bit of residual moisture which has kept the clouds in place from Interstate 20 and points south overnight. It looks like these clouds will be difficult to get rid of for much of the day. I do believe we will see those clouds slowly sag south with time today and tonight.

We’re going to have a sharp gradient between picture-perfect clear skies and overcast today as residual moisture takes its time to boogie on south. The Panhandle, West Texas, and Red River should be sunny today with high temperatures from the middle 70s into the middle 80s. Dewpoints will be in the 40s and 50s so it’ll be much drier than last week. By the time you get south to Interstate 20 the clouds will rapidly increase and remain that way all the way south to Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico. The sun/cloud line should make slow progress south today, but it’ll be at a snail’s pace. Highs will top out in the 70s and 80s across the state today with a noticeably drier airmass. These temperatures are a good 10-20 degrees lower than last week’s 90s and 100s. Winds will be light out of the north.

Rain chances through tonight will be confined to coastal sections of the Middle Texas Coast southwest into the Rio Grande Valley. It is looking pretty wet today in the Rio Grande Valley. Localized minor flooding may occur but overall I think the heavy rain/flood threat has come down considerably compared to the past few days. A few light sprinkles may fall from Interstate 10 and south today.

The clouds will continue to slowly move south tonight and we should see mostly clear skies for the northern half of Texas by sunrise Wednesday. Temperatures will fall back into the 50s to right around 60 degrees where skies are clear. Another night of 40s is probable in parts of the Panhandle and West Texas. Just cool enough to get a sweater out of storage! Temperatures where clouds remain locked in tonight will be a tad warmer with 60s – with lower 70s right along the coast.

No major storm systems are anticipated through late week. Temperatures will slowly moderate and we’ll get back up into the 80s across most of the state for afternoon high temperatures. Lows should remain in the 50s and 60s – albit a bit warmer closer to the coast. Overall this is looking like a decent week for early fall. Enjoy it!
