Next weathermaker is on Texas’ Doorstep

We’ll see a break in higher rain chances this afternoon, but our next upper-level storm system will end that lull tonight. We’ll sometimes be dealing with low clouds and drizzle, but it’ll also be warm today. Showers and thunderstorms will move into West Texas, the Panhandle, and the Permian Basin late tonight and Saturday morning.

Second Upper-Level System Arrives on Saturday

Numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning across the eastern two-thirds of Texas. Showers and storms will move across the eastern third of Texas during the afternoon on Sunday before exiting Texas to the east Sunday evening – leaving Texas dry in time for Santa to get his rounds in late Sunday night and into Christmas morning. Christmas Day should feature dry weather and falling temperatures as a cold front moves southeast across the state.

Unlike the round of rain yesterday and this morning, we’ll have more ‘oomph’ in place with the second upper-level storm system. Thunderstorms capable of producing small hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall are expected.

Forecast Rain Totals & Flood Threat

We’ve increased the forecast rain totals across the eastern forty percent of Texas – with an additional one to three inches of rain expected today through Sunday afternoon. Street flooding and high water in the bar ditches will be likely, with some threat of minor flooding along more fast-responding creeks and streams.

Widespread flooding isn’t expected, but we’ll probably see some high water issues in typical low-lying troublespots across the eastern third of Texas late Saturday through Sunday evening. We’ll have to watch the rivers and lakes next week for some rises, though we certainly could use the rain.

After the rains move out late Sunday, we’ll probably be in for an extended period of dry weather again. Light rain is possible Wednesday morning in South Texas. After a warm next few days, Christmas Day will return to ‘winter-time temperatures’ with gusty northwest winds behind a cold front. We’re not talking about any frigid, arctic air, but it’ll be cool to start the upcoming week. A slow climb up the temperature roller-coaster will be underway by mid-week.

Housekeeping…

Safe travels and a good Friday to you all. We’ll do a special Texas Weather Roundup video on Saturday, followed by no video on Sunday or Monday. However, written updates here on the Texas Weather Blog and in the Texas Storm Chasers Mobile App will continue both days.

Pam Allen Sohan , definitely comfortable compared to Summer, live in the Midwest through a polar vortex and you would enjoy a nice 70 degree day

Pamela Ann I grew up in Chicagoland, lived in IL until I was 27. We were stationed in OH for three years, I know what winter is like. Thats why I live in Texas. That being said, I love when it gets cold here. Partly because I know it’s not going to last for 5 months. And because that’s my reward for surviving June-September.
