Isolated Light Showers Through the Weekend; Rapid Warmup by Sunday

A rather chilly day is in store for most of Texas today. High temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s across a majority of the state this afternoon. A few exceptions include the Borderland who will be in the 60s and 70s this afternoon, and the Rio Grande Valley and immediate coastline who will top out in the lower 60s today. A warm up begins on Saturday across the western half of Texas and the southern half of Texas with highs in the 60s and 70s. The cold air will win the battle on Saturday with highs only in the 40s to lower 50s in Northeast Texas and East Texas.

Just in time for Superbowl Sunday a big warm up occurs across all of Texas. We’ll see high temperatures range from the middle 60s in Northeast Texas up into the 70s across North Texas, West Texas, south all the way into South Texas and Southeast Texas. Lower 80s are forecast in the Permian Basin and the middle 80s in Deep South Texas. Houston’s high temperature on Sunday is forecast to be 75 degrees – a big time improvement from the ice storms and arctic outbreak in 2011 up in Dallas. Monday will be even warmer across Texas with widespread 70s and 80s. A few spots may approach record high territory. Tuesday will feature 90s in Deep South Texas with middle 80s up into Central Texas – again with record highs possible. 70s are expected in the Permian Basin, Northwest Texas, through Texoma, into Northeast Texas. The Panhandle will be a tad cooler with highs in the 60s.

The next several days will feature low chances for light rain. We’re not talking about thunderstorms, heavy rain, or anything close to a washout. These showers will be isolated to scattered, and won’t last for an extended period. The highest chances of rain, and I use that term in a relative sense, will be across East and Northeast Texas through the weekend. The ‘highest’ rain chances will actually only be about a one in three chance. As such, we’re not talking about a widespread soaker.
