Cold Front Has Arrived… Warm Superbowl Weekend Ahead

A cold front extends from Houston southwest into South-Central Texas this morning. Most locations north of the cold front have reached their high temperature for the day. North winds will make for a brisk day. Temperatures are below freezing in the Big Country, Northwest Texas, West Texas, and are way below freezing in the Texas Panhandle. We should see a decent dirurnal rise in those areas with clear skies, although temperatures still won’t get out of the 30s this afternoon. Further east in North Texas, Texoma, and Northeast Texas we’re not likely to see nearly as much of a diurnal rise this afternoon. It’ll be a cold, nasty day.

High temperatures on Friday will remain on the cool side across the northern half of Texas. Highs will remain in the 40s and 50s north of West Texas, to the Concho Valley, to Central Texas, and East Texas. The Borderland and Deep South Texas will remain on the warm side of this front with highs in the 70s. San Antonio east to Houston to Beaumont will get into the middle 60s with comparatively low humidity. A moderating trend will commence on Saturday, but cold air damming will continue in Northeast Texas with highs struggling to get out of the 40s and lower 50s in D/FW. The remainder of the state will peak in the 60s and 70s.

The last time we had a super bowl in Texas it just happened to coincide with a week-long arctic blast and two winter storms. That will not be the case this time around with highs in the upper 60s to middle 80s across Texas. Houston will top out around 74 degrees with a low chance for light rain. No significant weather impacts are expected and it’ll be a good day for football. Traffic wise? Well… not so much. Monday will be just as warm across Texas with highs in the 70s and 80s. Chances arrive later on Monday and into Tuesday as a cold front and dryline come into play. We’ll deal with any potential forecast issues with Monday/Tuesday once we get into the weekend. High fire weather danger looks probable west of the dryline, and perhaps a chance for a few storms along the cold front on Monday Night.
