Friday: Widespread rain chances in Texas to start off October

Congratulations on making it to another Friday! I realize the weather may not be the most appealing as we head into the weekend, but it could definitely be worse. Mother Nature is welcoming October to Texas with widespread areas of rain. Folks in Austin down to San Antonio got woken up by thunderstorms this morning – with a quick one to four inches of rain.

Street flooding and localized flash flooding will continue to be a threat with heavier rains throughout the day. While widespread flooding is not expected, we don’t need anyone trying to test out the theory of how much water it takes to stall out my car.

Rain chances will be highest during the morning hours across South Texas, the Middle and Upper Texas coast, and inland regions of Southeast Texas and the Brazos Valley. As we get into the afternoon hours, scattered to numerous showers and storms will likely pop up across most of Texas.

Portions of Texoma and North Texas may see a relative lull in precipitation coverage compared to other areas. Severe thunderstorms aren’t on the calling cards today. Are calling cards still even a thing?

Excessive rainfall outlook

Localized flash flooding is possible today, where heavier thunderstorms develop. Thanks to a primarily dry September (outside of Nicholas on the coast), widespread flooding is not expected. An exception will be areas that have received heavy rain already this week. Slow-moving thunderstorms will also promote heavy rainfall amounts over a short period.

Weekend rain chances and thereafter

Rain chances will continue today, tonight, and into Saturday. Although, rain chances will start ending from west to east tomorrow night. It won’t be raining every moment of the next two days, but there will be a couple of opportunities for downpours. The western half of Texas will be drying out starting tomorrow night.

On Sunday, rain chances will be confined to the southeastern third of Texas. After that and into Monday, scattered showers and storms may continue across Deep South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, and the immediate Lower and Middle Texas coast. Much of the precipitation mentioned above will be more hit-or-miss tropical downpours versus the widespread rains we will see today.
