Extreme Fire Danger Tomorrow – Coldest Air of the Season Arrives Friday

Another day of record heat across the state resulted in numerous cities reaching or exceeding previous record highs for today.  DFW International reached 87 breaking their record of 86.  Austin (Bergstrom) reached 87 breaking their record of 84.  Amarillo reached 83 breaking their record of 82.  San Angelo reached 84 breaking their record of 83 and Longview reached 86 breaking their record of 85.  Dalhart tied at 84, Borger tied at 85, Wichita Falls tied at 84 and Texarkana tied at 85.  Very breezy and dry conditions are expected once again tomorrow afternoon ahead of the cold front which will mean another day with a threat of wildfires across much of the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles and down into far western Texas. Sustained winds tomorrow across the area are expected to range between 25 to 35mph with gusts up to 55mph likely.  Once the front moves through the panhandle late tomorrow, we’ll see humidity values rapidly increase which will bring an end to the threat of wildfires.

Forecast highs for Thursday will be slightly cooler across the panhandle thanks to a few high clouds streaming in.  Elsewhere, much the same as we saw today and still well above normal for most of the state.

Once the front moves through during the day on Friday, we’ll see quite a dramatic drop in temperatures overnight.  The panhandle, west Texas and parts of western north Texas will all see temps drop to at or below freezing by early Saturday morning, so prepare now if you have sensitive plants that need to be covered or brought indoors. The immediate Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex should stay just shy of 32 degrees early Saturday morning, but outlying areas could certainly dip close to freezing.  Once the colder air has settled in across the state on Saturday, we’ll see temperatures flirt with freezing again on Saturday night into early Sunday.  Freeze Advisories may be needed, but likely won’t be issued until Friday or Saturday as the forecast continues to refine.
