Today will be a cold and dreary day across most of Texas. High temperatures this afternoon will range from the low 30s across the South Plains up to around 50 degrees across the Coastal Plains and the Rio Grande Valley. Folks across North Texas, Central Texas, East Texas, through the Concho Valley and all surrounding areas will top out in the 40s today.

Periods of light rain are expected today across the Rio Grande Valley, Deep South Texas, into the Coastal Plains and Southeast Texas. It won’t rain all the time but I do expect several rounds of rain today and on Saturday. Precipitation chances diminish rapidly north of Interstate 10. Scattered showers will certainly be possible across Central Texas and the Brazos Valley tonight and on Saturday. Temperature profiles will support a few sleet pellets but warmer surface temperatures and the light precipitation totals means no accumulation.

Rain accumulations of half an inch to one and a half inches are expected across the Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas through Sunday morning. Rain totals rapidly diminish with northward extent towards Interstate 10. Six-hourly rain totals should remain near or under a quarter of an inch over a period of two days. Flash flooding is not expected due to the long-duration rain and relatively light rainfall rates. The atmosphere will not be supportive of thunderstorms or severe weather.

Tonight into Saturday morning will be cold across all of Texas. Low temperatures will be warmest along the coast, across the Rio Grande Valley, the Coastal Plains, and Southeast Texas with upper 30s and low 40s. Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and B/CS should all fall into the upper 30s. San Angelo, Brownwood, D/FW, and Paris will fall off into the low 30s. Midland, Lubbock, Amarillo, Vernon, and Wichita Falls will drop into the 20s tonight. The coldest sections of the Panhandle will fall into the upper 10s tonight. Temperatures will be chilly but not unreasonable for the second day of January.
