Welcome to the start of meteorological winter which runs from December 1st through the end of February. This is the time-frame in which the weather across the United States (northern hemisphere) acts like what you would expect during the winter months. The real start of winter is still a few weeks away. Anyway… We’re starting out with areas of fog this morning as temperatures have fallen back to near saturation point. We should see most fog burn off by mid-morning as temperatures warm up. Where we don’t have fog you’re likely experiencing overcast skies. Those clouds may try and break up a bit this afternoon but some of y’all are in for a cloudy day.

Today’s high temperature forecast

On the temperature front we’ll have temperatures warm up to near or a few degrees below seasonal average for early December. Highs in the 50s are expected along the Red River, in Northeast Texas, North Texas, into the Brazos Valley. The coastline, Rio Grande Valley, Southwest Texas, Hill Country, west into the Permian Basin should top out right around 60 degrees this afternoon. A few showers are possible in Southeast Texas.

Another very cold night is expected across the Texas Panhandle and West Texas. Dalhart is forecast to drop to 19 degrees tonight with 20s expected across the aforementioned areas. Northwest Texas, the Big Country, Concho Valley, and Permian Basin will all drop into the 20s to low 30s tonight. 40s can be expected in South and Southeast Texas. Another way to think about the forecast tonight is if you have clear skies – expect to get pretty cold. If you have clouds in the area temperatures won’t get nearly as cold.

Our next storm system continues to look possible on Saturday. At this time limited moisture is expected to keep precipitation totals very light and confined to the Texas Panhandle and perhaps some of West Texas. A rain/snow mix is possible across the Panhandle with only minor snow accumulations expected at this time. This system looks pretty pathetic thanks to recent cold fronts scouring moisture out well into the Gulf.
