A dangerous flash flood event is materializing this evening for Corpus Christi. Several inches of rain fell this morning causing flooding and saturating soils. Additional rain developed this evening which caused flash flooding to rapidly resume and worsen. Another band of very heavy rain will move into the city around 10 PM. This band of rain will likely produce an additional two to three inches of rain (perhaps in an hour). This is known as ‘training’.
Based on observed conditions – with numerous water rescues underway in Corpus Christi – the additional heavy rain has the potential to cause a significant and life-threatening flood event tonight. Conditions are expected to deteriorate further in Corpus Christi after 10 PM as additional heavy rain moves into the city. Travel should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. If you must travel understand that many roads are underwater.
Flood waters are difficult to see at night and can prove deadly. Remember – Turn Around Don’t Drown! Jason Cooley is in Corpus Christi and will provide ground-truth and visual media throughout the night as this potentially dangerous flash flood situation unfolds.
