Winter Weather Threats Continue Across the Texas Panhandle

A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the northeast Texas panhandle counties and the central and eastern Oklahoma panhandle counties until 6am Monday morning. Counties included in the WSW are Texas, Beaver, Ochiltree, Lipscomb, Roberts, Hemphill and Wheeler.  Cities within the WSW area include Guymon, Beaver, Forgan, Perryton, Booker, Higgins, Follett, Miami, Canadian, Shamrock and Wheeler. Periods of light to moderate freezing rain will continue across the area today changing over to all snow during the overnight hours. Ice accumulations up to an inch are expected.  Snow accumulation between 1-4 inches is possible; however the highest snowfall totals are expected northwest of the area. Travel within the WSW area is expected to become dangerous if not impossible.  Heavy ice buildup on power lines is likely and power outages overnight are likely.  Travel across the region is highly discouraged.  If you must travel, be sure to take blankets, water and snacks with you in case you become stranded.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for much of the northern, western and central portions of the Texas panhandle also through 6am Monday morning. Counties included in the WWA are Cimarron, Dallam, Deaf Smith, Sherman, Hansford, Hartley, Moore, Hutchinson, Oldham, Potter, Carson, Gray and Randall.  Cities within the WWA include Boise City, Keyes, Dalhart, Hereford, Stratford, Spearman, Gruver, Hartley, Channing, Dumas, Borger, Vega, Amarillo, Panhandle, White Deer, Pampa and Canyon.  Periods of rain and freezing rain will continue across the WWA area this afternoon.  Temperatures are currently right at freezing across the area with heavier bands of precipitation moving in from the west.  Periods of heavy precipitation could bring the surface temperatures up just above freezing, but as we get into the evening and overnight hours, it will changeover to freezing rain, sleet and snow.  Ice accumulations up to 1/4 inch are expected.  Snow overnight will accumulate between 1 and 4 inches with the highest totals across the northwestern portions of the panhandle. Bridges and overpasses will become slick as well as sidewalks.  Travel across the region beginning late this evening is discouraged.
