Thunderstorms Tonight & Christmas Eve for eastern 75% of Texas

‘Twas two nights before Christmas, and all through our State, the clouds were stirring and rain drops await. After starting with dense fog this morning, we’re monitoring a line of thunderstorms across the eastern Panhandle, West Texas, south into the Permian Basin and Big Bend. Showers are also increasing in coverage across the eastern half of Texas. It will be a wet night and Christmas Eve for the eastern two-thirds of Texas. You can track the storms with our interactive weather radar on our website and free mobile app.

High resolution weather model radar tonight through Sunday evening across Texas. Thunderstorms will continue to march from west to east. By midday Sunday, the best chance for rain will be along and east of Interstate 35. By late Sunday evening, the last rain showers will be departing Texas - leaving us dry in time for Santa's deliveries and Christmas Day.

The line of thunderstorms across the western portions of Texas will continue to march east tonight and on Sunday. That activity will continue until it is well east of Texas Sunday night. Thunderstorms producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and small hail are expected. The threat of severe thunderstorms with large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes is very low. Our main issue overnight and Sunday will be minor flooding from heavy rainfall.

Forecast Rain Totals and Flood Threat on Christmas Eve

Texoma, North Texas, the Brazos Valley, Southeast Texas, and the Golden Triangle have the best chance of receiving an additional one to three inches of rain by Sunday evening. Most of that rain will fall in the span of about six hours as the line of storms continues to march from west to east. Minor flooding is a good bet, with plenty of ponding on roads, high water in bar ditches, etc. One-half to one inch of rain is expected tonight into Sunday morning in Northwest Texas, the Big Country, Concho Valley, Hill Country, South-Central Texas, and the Coastal Plains.

Rain chances will conclude for the western half of Texas early Sunday afternoon. Our last round of appreciable precipitation should move east of Texas on Sunday evening. We do not anticipate any hazardous weather impacts on Santa’s delivery schedule tomorrow night. Christmas Day will be dry across Texas, with falling temperatures and gusty northwest winds as a cold front moves across the state.

David Angel Small hail is possible. Can’t rule out nickel to quarter size hail with some of the more robust storms in the Permian Basin this evening.

Chad Ramirez I’m in the Spring area and it’s been barely raining. All hype again. Local weather just said it probably won’t be much.
