Multiple opportunities for rain this week with no foreseeable arctic outbreaks

Good Monday, and welcome to the eighteenth day of 2021. Texas’s northern two-thirds are starting seasonably cool with warm air advection underway in Deep South Texas and South Texas. The moisture return has allowed for a nearly saturated atmosphere with dense fog resulting. Reduced visibilities could continue until lunch-time along the immediate coast from Corpus Christi south to South Padre Island.

Winter? Not this week, Texas!

I’ll go ahead and get through the temperature forecast for the workweek. In short, a cool front will slowly move south today and on Tuesday across Texas. Temperatures north of the front will tend to be the 40s to around 50 degrees during the day. Those south of the cool front will enjoy temperatures up into the 60s and the 70s. Depending on which model solutions verify, Wednesday may end up being cooler than the current forecast indicates. Regardless, we’ll start a nice warmup on Thursday and Friday across the entire state.

Low temperatures this week will be near or above what we’d typically expect in January. No significant arctic intrusions are forecast to impact Texas over the next ten days. I suppose that’s fair, given we started the year with two major winter storms across Texas.

Unsettled weather means rain chances, but not for those that need it.

Scattered showers are likely tomorrow near and just behind a southward moving cool front from the Edwards Plateau northeastward to the Arklatex. Rain chances will expand into South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley tomorrow night. Precipitation totals may average between one-tenth to one-half inch through Wednesday. Severe storms and flooding are not expected. A second precipitation event could occur on Thursday and Friday across North-Central and Northeast Texas. We’re still waiting to see how the ducks line up for the second rain event, but moisture values will be much more supportive of heavy rain.

Saturday should provide a respite from rain chances before yet another storm system approaches Sunday and early next week. Severe storms are not expected this week. Depending on our second event on Thursday and Friday, we might have some localized flooding problems late in the week in Northeast Texas. No winter storms are expected for the foreseeable future – much to snow fans’ dismay (myself included).
