7:30pm Severe Weather Update

The radar across West Texas is lighting up like a Christmas tree this evening with scattered supercells near Sterling City, Big Spring, southwest of Andrews and west of Seminole and north of Valentine.  The cell southwest of Andrews and northwest of Goldsmith, has a confirmed tornado.  This cell continues to move southeast towards Goldsmith at around 25mph. Folks in the path of this storm need to seek shelter immediately.  These scattered supercells will continue to affect this region for the next couple of hours before dying off after sunset.  Large hail is the main threat with these storms along with damaging 60 to 70mph winds, frequent lightning and heavy rain. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10pm this evening for this region.

Further north in the panhandle, we have another cluster of Severe Warned storms moving southeast into the Dalhart area.  It’s this cluster of storms that is expected to expand in coverage over the next several hours affecting the northern and eastern panhandle this evening, western Oklahoma overnight and eventually north central Texas by early tomorrow morning.  A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect through 11pm this evening for this region.  These storms will carry a threat of strong winds and hail.  We’ll be monitoring the radar overnight and post updates as needed.
