6:55pm Evening Severe Weather Update

Lot’s of activity on the radar between Lubbock and the Midland/Odessa area this evening.  A few of these cells are currently severe warned with wind gusts in excess of 60mph, prolific lightning, very heavy downpours and localized flash flooding as the main threats.  The cells along I-20 between Midland and Stanton have sent a strong outflow boundary southward which is likely creating a wall of dust.  These storms will continue to move southeast this evening and begin to die out in a few hours.  Those of us in north central Texas that have been dealing with these late evening/overnight storms are saying “It’s y’all’s turn!” right now.

The chances for nocturnal storms tonight looks pretty low at the moment, but not zero either.  Of course, the past several nights have offered some surprises for north central Texas and left local forecasters licking their wounds.  There’s still upper level energy traversing roughly west to east across the northern half of the state.  This could indeed spark a round of scattered showers and storms tonight across north Texas which has about a 20% probability.  Elsewhere overnight, continued humid and warm for most areas except for west Texas where lower humidity values overnight will keep it much less muggy.
