Future Hurricanes Sally and Teddy – Hurricane Warnings in LA/MS

It is very busy in the Atlantic right now. NHC is currently watching:

  • 1 Hurricane (Paulette) closing in on Bermuda
  • 1 Tropical Storm (Sally) due to become a hurricane tonight and reach LA/MS tomorrow night
  • 2 Tropical Depressions (Rene and ‘20’), with ‘20’ expected to become Teddy today and eventually a hurricane
  • 3 disturbances with varying chances of tropical storm formation

Hurricane Warnings are in effect for SE Louisiana and S Mississippi for Sally, now expected to be a Cat-2 upon landfall. Storm surge and major flooding are expected in SE LA, S MS and SW AL. Some noticeable surge may take place as far out as Burns Point, Louisiana to the Florida Big Bend. Highest surge levels of 7-11feet are forecast in Lake Borgne and surrounding low lying areas. The eye should impact far SE Louisiana tomorrow night and slowly drift north toward Slidell, Bay Saint Louis, and Gulfport into Tuesday. Major flooding of 15-20 inches (not including storm surge) will affect this area as well with the slow storm movement. Avoid traveling between Baton Rouge and Pensacola over the next few days! Wind damage may not be excessive from Sally, but such flooding could be deadly. Tornadoes and waterspouts in Sally’s outer bands can happen at moment’s notice as well.

Looking farther out east:

TD-20 should get named Teddy by tonight and is forecast to become a hurricane in a few days. Its forecast path doesn’t favor US impacts, but Bermuda may have to watch for it. This could change, however. They sure have plenty to deal with already with Paulette tonight through tomorrow.
