Tropical Blob heading for Texas: Coastal Flooding And Heavy Rain On The Horizon!

A tropical blob is on its way to Texas, bringing significant rain, gusty winds, and the potential for coastal flooding. For some, the rain will replenish dried lakebeds. For others, it may lead to flooding. However, the cloud cover will provide a respite from our late spring heat for nearly everyone. Rest assured, we closely monitor this system and will provide you with the most up-to-date information.

The National Hurricane Center gives our tropical blob a high chance of evolving into a tropical depression or storm over the next few days. Whatever the system is eventually named will have little impact on our forecast. Rain, some of which will be heavy, and gusty winds will be our primary impacts. For the Texas Gulf Coast, several days of gusty on-shore winds will result in the potential for flooding during high tide.

A tropical disturbance has a high chance of evolving into a tropical depression or weak tropical storm in the western Gulf of Mexico over the next couple of days. This system is slowly moving toward northern Mexico; with moisture and gusty winds for the Texas Gulf Coast.

A potent sea breeze will push well inland this afternoon, making a run at the D/FW Metroplex to Texarkana by dinner time. Isolated to scattered popup showers and storms are possible near and south of the sea breeze today. Gusty winds, brief heavy rain, and a nice temperature drop can be expected if you end up under a popup storm. That activity will decrease after sunset. We may also see a few storms in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains this afternoon – with hail and strong winds.

Another round of popup storms is expected in the eastern third of Texas on Tuesday. Unlike today, rain chances will increase tomorrow evening to Wednesday morning across the Texas Gulf Coast, Golden Triangle, Southeast Texas, and Coastal Plains. Rainfall will become heavier tomorrow night, with the threat of flash flooding along the coast, Southeast Texas, and the Golden Triangle. The heaviest rains may set up in the Coastal Plains and in areas just west and south of Houston, but that’s getting nitpicky at this time range.

Forecast Rain Totals

Several inches of rain are expected to fall over the next several days across the southern half of Texas. Some locations may receive between six and ten inches of rain. The flooding threat will be highest on Tuesday night, Wednesday, and Thursday. There may be a sharp cut-off for rain for the northern half of Texas.

Determining where the heaviest axis of rain sets up for tomorrow night through Thursday will depend on the track of our storm system. The track has already shifted a bit further south compared to yesterday, but that benefits South Texas, Central Texas, Hill Country, and Edwards Plateau because they need the rain. The northern edge of the rain may have a sharp cutoff, resulting in some folks getting several inches of rain, while those fifty miles north may see sprinkles. I expect we will continue to refine this throughout the day and into Tuesday.

Nitty-Gritty on who may get the most rain

Advertisements

Rain chances will be highest on Wednesday and Thursday across Central Texas, Hill Country, South Texas, Edwards Plateau, Concho Valley, Permian Basin, and eastern Big Bend. This system will be moving from east to west, so the rain will also be. At least, activity will slowly move from east to west. Flash flooding will remain probable where the heaviest rains fall.

Under the heaviest activity, hourly rainfall rates may exceed three inches. Since this system will be moving slowly, we may see those excessive hourly rainfall rates continue in some locations for an extended period. That’s where the highest risk of impactful flash flooding will occur. We’ll work to narrow down the most probable axis of heaviest rains over the next day, but urban locations will be under even higher risk.

Extended Range Weather Forecast

Rain chances will push into the Panhandle, West Texas, and perhaps the Trans-Pecos Thursday Night and Friday. While widespread rains will end across the eastern half of Texas by Thursday, abundant tropical moisture will remain. Popup showers and storms will probably continue along the Texas Gulf Coast and adjacent inland regions through the weekend.

I have ZERO doubts it’ll be named Alberto before the end of the day. It’ll also unfortunately 100% be another devastating flooding event for the area I live in (Liberty County in SE Texas).

The Trinity was/is already too high from the last devastating flood some of this area JUST endured to their homes/businesses.

The timing of this disturbance is just awful. 😔 My heart goes out to all of the folks out here who are about to go through it all over again with this disturbance.

It’s already been predicted that the Trinity will once again reach MAJOR flood levels out here.

Y’all stay safe out there! ✌🏼

Yeah, REAL funny, isn’t it Dee Ortega? 🥴

      Not exactly. 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

    • Jeremiah A Byrns

Nick Baragas it’s seems alright outside this morning. The percentage of rain dropped to 15 percent

    • Nick Baragas

Jeremiah A Byrns Only Time Will tell. As long as it doesn’t strengthen more than anticipated AND makes the hard turn to the West as models are predicting, then we MIGHT be okay, but weather will do its thing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m also concerned about what models are showing for NEXT weekend. Another potential storm to develop in the Gulf behind this one.

It’s definitely going to be a BUSY season. 😬
