Slight relief from the heat by the weekend?

Tuesday marked the hottest day so far in 2023 for most of our West Texas towns, while today and Thursday will mark the hottest days for the eastern two-thirds of Texas. The good news is that the upper-level heat dome responsible for all this heat will begin to shift west of Texas this weekend. That’ll allow northwesterly winds aloft to return and bring slightly less hot temperatures to much of Texas. It will still be toasty, but high temperatures will drop five to nine degrees on average by the weekend.

Those in the western third of Texas may have a more noticeable temperature drop as a monsoonal weather pattern takes shape this weekend and next week. That monsoonal flow will bring the return of precipitation chances to the western half of Texas, including some that could occur on Independence Day. Lightning, locally heavy rainfall, pocket-change-size hail, and gusty winds will be a concern. We’ll discuss the specific popup storm chances for the weekend and next week once we get closer.
