Popup storms for your Memorial Day Texas Weather Forecast

After a non-stop week of thunderstorms across western portions of Texas, we’re finally going to see a couple days of ‘downtime’ as the stagnant upper-level weather pattern gives us a break. However, we’ll be shifting gears and keeping an eye on popup thunderstorm chances as we continue through this morning and into the afternoon hours across the eastern two-thirds of Texas. These ‘popcorn storms’ tend to bubble up quickly, throw out lightning, drop a bunch of heavy rain, and settle down within an hour or so. They’ll shoot out gusty outflow winds as they weaken, and that outflow will help other showers and storms perk up nearby. That process will continue ’till we get towards dinner time, and we should see most storms die off not long after sunset. Lots of cloud-to-ground lightning, heavy rain, small hail, and strong winds can be expected with the more rambunctious storms.

Late tonight into Tuesday morning, a complex of showers and thunderstorms across Oklahoma may move southeast and into Texoma and Northeast Texas. Those storms are not likely to be severe in Texas but could throw out lightning, locally heavy rain, and gusty winds. Popup storm chances may continue on Tuesday across the eastern third of Texas and along the Gulf Coast.

Temperatures will be about right where they should be for late May for much of the week across Texas. We’re not seeing any sort of heatwaves on the horizon, a blessing after the summer of 2022. In fact, we may head back into a ‘spring-like’ weather pattern as we get closer to the weekend, with a return of stronger thunderstorms to western Texas, and perhaps areas farther east by the weekend.
