The frigid cold of winter will be in Texas soon enough. It may feel like its here today, but this is only the free preview. Thunderstorms have exited East Texas this morning. A few light snow showers moving east across North Texas will likely be gone shortly, too. Today’s primary weather issue will be strong northwest winds. Some wind gusts over 40 MPH are expected across the state. Wind speeds will decrease quickly after sunset.
Cold Front Timing
A quick warmup will occur before an arctic cold front arrives on Saturday. That potent cold front will arrive in the Texas Panhandle Saturday morning and quickly move south through Texas. Our latest timing estimates have the cold front reaching Brownsville around 9 AM Sunday. Temperatures ahead of the front will be pleasantly warm. After the front’s arrival, temperatures will drop thirty to forty degrees with a blustery north wind. That will begin a two to four-day stretch of sub-freezing temperatures for the northern half of Texas. The southern half of Texas will deal with shorter-duration periods below freezing.
Colder than an angry Mother-in-Law
Monday and Tuesday morning temperatures will drop below zero in the Texas Panhandle. Single-digit temperatures are expected south to Interstate 20. We’ll see teens south to Interstate 10. The twenties to low thirties are expected Tuesday morning into the Rio Grande Valley. We encourage folks to make sure their pipes are ready. Drip those faucets, and know how to cut off your water if a pipe bursts.
We’ll begin a warming trend on Tuesday, with most of Texas climbing above freezing in the afternoon. After another cold start, Wednesday will be the day all of Texas climbs above freezing. Thursday will bring back the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Another strong cold front may bring winter back to Texas next weekend.
Freezing Rain, Sleet, and Ice Chances
The chance for light winter weather (freezing rain, sleet) increases from Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon. This could include the Hill Country, Central Texas, North Texas, Texoma, Northeast Texas, the Ark-La-Tex, and East Texas. Unlike the damaging ice storm last year in Central Texas or some of our more potent winter storms, this one doesn’t look like a big-time accumulation-maker. Ice accumulations would tend to remain below one-tenth of an inch. Yet, given our very cold weather, that would be enough to cause slicker-than-snot road conditions. The frigid cold will remain the most widespread weather hazard, but we must monitor icy trends during the weekend.

Nice to know. I do have a question or query or such. My son and DDIL moved from Round Rock to Delaware. I’m driving him batty asking about storms as I haven’t mentally imaged Delaware in my brain. Do they, Delaware, have a storm group that I can follow?
I hear the snow and ice won’t be coming to DFW after all
Emily Segura
Happens every year
For people that bang on their chest about being a badass Texan yall sure are pansies. It’s only gonna be 20 for God sake. Quit raiding the grocery stores like the world is ending. It’s only supposed to last 3 days. Keep your heat on and dress warm. Hell that is a warm day in Chicago in the winter. Smdh.
