April Fools brings Big Hail Storms to Texas (Afternoon Update)

Scattered severe thunderstorms have developed in the Big Country and Northwest Texas this afternoon. Storms were able to develop further west than anticipated, thanks to a weaker cap (lid) on the atmosphere. This westward shift in initial development means more of Texoma, North Texas, Big Country, and the Concho Valley are under the gun for isolated to scattered supercell thunderstorms this evening.

Most folks will not deal with severe weather this evening; let’s clarify that. However, the most intense storms will be capable of producing significant impacts. Giant hail up to the size of softballs, wind gusts over 70 MPH, and a few tornadoes are all possible with the most intense activity. Additional storms are likely to develop after dinner-time further south. That activity may threaten the Interstate 35 corridor from San Antonio north through Austin, Waco, and the D/FW Metroplex. Storms will move east/northeast at 35 to 50 MPH. We expect the severe weather threat to begin diminishing after 10 PM, but it may continue through early Tuesday morning (mainly a hail/wind threat).
