Dense fog will be a problem across the Permian Basin tonight into adjacent sections of the western Big Country and south of Lubbock. With temperatures in the teens and twenties the fog will likely deposit a thin layer of ice on exposed objects. Bridges and surface roads are included and should be treated as if they have black ice on them. Freezing Fog is a silent killer since most folks don’t expect fog to ice up roads. Last year a bus ended up sliding off a road onto a moving train out in West Texas due to an unexpectedly slick bridge. We don’t need any traffic accidents caused by speeding drivers who aren’t expecting slick roads. Some snow cover remains on the ground and with freezing fog expected I strongly encourage you to be mindful of icy roads tonight. The dense fog should burn off not long after sunrise as temperatures start to rise above the dewpoint value.
