Lunchtime Flash Flood Update and Thursday's Forecast

2016-06-02_12-02-51

I’ll keep this short and sweet since we don’t have that many new forecast updates to share. Heavy rains overnight produced flash flooding in the San Antonio and Austin areas northward into portions of North Texas. At lunchtime we’ve had the heaviest rains shift into far Southeast Texas extending northwest on an axis through Lufkin to Hillsboro to Stephenville, Hamilton, to Brownwood. The heaviest rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour are in far Southeast Texas including Port Arthur, Beaumont, north to Jasper where flash flood warnings are in effect. Heavy rains could continue in those cities for most of the afternoon before we hopefully see a lull this evening. Another round of heavy rain may push back into those same areas tonight. So for today that’s where we are most concerned about major rains of 5-10+ inches. Rains across North Texas are comparatively lighter with 1 to 2 inches per hour – still quite suitable to support flash flooding. These region is also where we’ll be watching for flash flooding throughout the afternoon. Central Texas, South Texas, the Brazos Valley, and Southeast TX (west of HOU) are enjoying a break in the rain. Skies have actually cleared and some folks are getting sun. The break in the rain is good while the sun isn’t exactly what we want to see. Another piece of energy aloft will move in this evening. The clearing skies are allowing the atmosphere to destabilize which will support development of showers/storms later on. It looks like we may get through most of the afternoon with a break in widespread precip before more develops this evening. Any heavy rain that develops will be able to produce flash flooding.

It won’t be raining in one spot constantly for the next two days nor will everyone get flooding. As demonstrated this afternoon there will be lulls in the precipitation as it comes in waves.
