Tropical Storm Harold Briefing for South Texas

Tropical Storm #Harold is a disorganized cyclone this morning, but it has managed to get a name before it makes landfall in South Texas later this morning. Heavy rainfall has begun spreading onto the Lower and Middle Texas coast, which will continue spreading inland into the Rio Grande Valley, Deep South Texas, and Rio Grande Plains throughout the day. Winds will sometimes be gusty, perhaps over 50 MPH, but this shouldn’t be a widespread, damaging wind event.

Harold is moving west/northwest at 18 MPH, which is pretty fast for a tropical system. That fast movement will continue and keep rainfall totals manageable. While localized flooding is possible thanks to expected rainfall amounts of two to five inches, this may be more beneficial than harmful. Soils should be able to absorb most of the rain because they’re drier than a popcorn fart.

Minor coastal flooding along the Middle Texas Coast could continue through Wednesday with onshore flow. Rough surf and dangerous rip currents are ongoing along the entire Texas Gulf Coast.

Isolated, brief tornadoes are possible across South-Central Texas, the Edwards Plateau, South Texas, and the Coastal Bend this morning and afternoon.

Harold will move into northern Mexico this evening, with the highest rain chances ending from east to west across the aforementioned regions by sunset. We will see rain chances increase Wednesday morning across the Big Bend region of Southwest Texas, through the Davis Mountains, and into the Borderland (El Paso) in Far West Texas. One to two inches of rain may fall in spots, with localized flooding also possible.

Outside of the lucky folks getting rain? Cloud cover may provide a small amount of relief from the heat, but it will still be like most other summer days. Temperatures peaking in the nineties and triple digits, with very high to extreme wildfire danger across Texas. That’ll be the game’s name through the end of the work week, just like it has been for the last month.
