5/18/2021 • Lamesa, Texas Hail, Many Gustnadoes & Tornado (FULL) {J/AB-A}

One month ago on MAY 18, 2021 near Seagraves to Gail, Texas. A gustnado is a weak vortex at the surface, (normally spotted by swirling dust) caused by storms. They are not connected to the storm cloud, so they are not tornadoes. Dust devils different and are fair weather vortices caused by differential heating on the surface, not storms.

In this case on 5/18/21, a funnel cloud was spotted and a circulation appeared underneath (stronger than a normal gustnado). This was a tornado despite not having a condensation funnel reach to the ground. Other than that, the other vortices we spotted were gustnadoes.

See the definition on https://forecast.weather.gov/glossary.php?letter=g
“A gustnado is a small, whirlwind which forms as an eddy in thunderstorm outflows. They do not connect with any cloud-base rotation and are not tornadoes. Since their origin is associated with cumuliform clouds, gustnadoes will be classified as Thunderstorm Wind events. Like dust devils, some stronger gustnadoes can cause damage.”
