Ida undergoing explosive intensification; now a Category 4 Major Hurricane

Major Hurricane Ida is explosively strengthening early this morning. Hurricane Hunter data from the 53rd Airborne indicates Ida has now become a category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour. Rapid deepening, or a lowering of the system’s central pressure, continues. The minimum central pressure is down to 949 millibars, down 6 millibars in one hour. A hurricane undergoing normal intensification would deepen one millibar in an hour, so six is on the extreme side. Continued intensification looks likely, and Ida may make a run at high-end category 4 intensity before landfall around lunchtime in Southeast Louisiana.
