Next cool front blows (literally) through Texas tomorrow

It’s Hump-Day, and we’re happy to be half-way through the work-week. After our second major winter storm of 2021 this past weekend, we’ve been enjoying relatively quiet weather across Texas. After yesterday’s brief graupel excitement in Southeast Texas, we’re not expecting appreciable precipitation in Texas for several days. Our most excitable weather will be tomorrow when crashy the cold front makes another visit to Texas. Unlike last week’s front, the one arriving tomorrow is more wind than arctic air.

Crashy the Cold Front!

Gusty northwest winds are expected Thursday behind a southward moving cold front.

Gusty northwest winds are expected Thursday behind a southward moving cold front.

Strong northerly winds gusting in the 40 to 50 miles per hour range are expected tomorrow across the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, Big Country, and Northwest Texas. It’ll definitely be noticeable, but we’re not talking about a ‘damaging’ wind event. However, I would be a bit cautious around any obviously-weakened tree limbs in areas that received heavy snow this past Sunday. Gusty northerly winds will spread south/southeast in conjunction with the cold front tomorrow. Compressional heating south of the cold front will result in temperatures near 80 degrees across South Texas tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow’s cool front will be a dry one with no precipitation forecast.

All bark, little bite

The arriving airmass behind the cold front will be a modified arctic airmass. High temperatures on Friday will generally be in the 40s across the Panhandles and West Texas with 50s along and north of Interstate 10. The Borderland (El Paso), South Texas, the Coastal Plains, and the Rio Grande Valley will top out in the 60s. As I said, we’re not talking about a nasty cold snap with this front. Overnight low temperatures will be cool Friday morning, but not anything unusual for January.

Warming weather in time for the weekend

Saturday's high temperature forecast for Texas

Saturday’s high-temperature forecast for Texas

A southerly flow will be establishing itself on Saturday, with a warming trend noted across the southern half of Texas. High temperatures are forecast to be in the upper 50s to the lower 70s south of Interstate 10. Cooler air will hang around a bit longer across the northern half of Texas. Overall, Saturday should be a pretty nice day in the weather department for Texas.

Rain chances return early next week.

Rain chances return to coastal regions of Texas on Sunday. Our next appreciable rain event looks possible by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week across Texas’s eastern half. Sorry snow fans, this one looks like it’ll be an ‘all rain’ event. We’ll see if we can maybe squeeze out a few flurries as the system departs, but that’s not in the calling cards with this forecast.
